We had been in New Zealand for three years when this photograph was taken in the sitting room at 85 Buckleys Road, Linwood, Christchurch. My father had moved the wooden garage by rolling it on beer bottles to the back of the garden and installed a couple of printing machines in it. From there he published the Linwood Times, a weekly suburban newspaper. Dad sold the advertising space and mother wrote most of the editorial copy, I contributed the children's page. My sister and I delivered the copies after school. Now called the Pegasus Post, it's still going strong.

The garage was a bit of an eyesore by this time and I won a school prize for growing flowering Sweet Pea all over it. It was also the year that my maternal grandparents emigrated to New Zealand. To make room for them my parents bought a small caravan, in which I lived among the Apple and Plum trees. From my earnings delivering the newspaper, I bought an ancient Short Wave radio and strung copper wire around the orchard. The discovery of the wider world was a revelation and within five years I was off on my own to explore.

45 years later, I'm back in the same neighbourhood and still listening to overseas radio stations, but now via the Internet.
